The currency of life : how do you invest yours

(BTW on writing this post I was on a train coming back from Birmingham on a SUNDAY evening after 9 hours of accounting classes.)

The other day , while on what I like to call my social rounds, I stumbled upon a blogger and digital nomad by the name of Jenny from “whereisjenny”. And while looking at her website and eventually her bucket list ( I’m fascinated by digital nomads) I saw this insightful quote that got me thinking. The quote goes thus:

“What I do today is important because I am exchanging 1 day of my life for it” – Hugh Mulligan

This got me to think about lots of things

Whatever you are doing at present is it worth paying with 1 day of your life. Assuming Given we have a finite life but no idea of how long it is makes the currency of paying with 1 day of our life extremely valuable.
Take it you have 365 days to live what will you be willing to pay with that? What will 1/365 be worth to you?
Now say you had 1000 days left what will 1/1000 be now worth to pay for?

But… We haven’t got those figures in reality. In reality it’s more likely 1/tomorrow/today or some unknown day in or time in the future.

Thereby making it harder to invest…

We all want to have plans for the future and everything. Plans such as work hard now for X years and retire and do Y for X years. You might have other plans and everything alike. But what we forget is the future is so uncertain that the only certainty is the uncertainty of tomorrow (if that makes sense at all)

What am I then currently exchanging my days for?

Many of you know little about me and hence wouldn’t know a lot of what I am up to and what I’m doing currently. Well I wouldn’t bore you with that (not today anyway). But just a brief about Present me (real me!).
You know when you were in college and you had the best time of your life? Were you had weeks of tremendous fun and nights out that lasted more than 72hours and usually ended with one of you either in ER with alcohol poisoning or days hidden in the dark working on a hangover cure! Sounds familiar? Well that’s not me, or wasn’t me!
Currently full time at college and pursuing a professional qualification simultaneously, weekends are not something I really look forward to. Reason being, I study 24/7 week in week out and throw in the occasional job and you’ll get a better picture. So that’s how I currently invest my unknown number of days, exchanging each one for hours of accounting.

What I want to exchange my days for!

Don’t get me wrong I love accounting and everything about it. But what I love most is the thrill of experiencing the unknown. What I want to exchange my days for is something which will add lots of value to PEOPLEs lives and eventually my life. Learning a skill, exploring the unknown, embracing new cultures. This can be only done via freedom. Freedom to dictate your next moves. Freedom to say and do and go were you want and finally freedom to live life on your own terms.

How I intend to do it?

Stick around and you’ll soon find out. But trust me, I’ll do it! One step and plan at a time. This is what I’ll pay for with my days.

Now you! Tell me something I wouldn’t find on your “about me” page ! Tell me how you are currently investing your time and how you’ll rather invest it!

This was the most powerful part of your post, to me, Martin. It concisely summed up your message. Thanks.

So, I feel like I’m in a similar place as you right now. I’m paying with my days for the pursuit of my dream of impacting people. In the last year, I completed my first book and just published it.

As far as the “learning something new,” now that I’ve learned how (not) to write a book…I’m learning how to promote and market it. It’s daunting and a little bit scary, but SO much fun!

I’m so lucky to have the opportunity to fill my days with that which brings me such joy!

Thanks for the kind words Steven! Like you were impacted by the last sentence, so was I when I fell on that quote.
It made me think, and think a lot I did. No matter what you’re doing or intend to do. Ultimately, is it something you’ll be willing to EXCHANGE one day of your life for?
Like you, you leaped in and your having a heck of a journey I must bet! But the signs of a true succesful person is to succesful deal with the downs we face on the way and eventually coming out untop! Which you are!

    Hi Martin,

Well what you won’t find in my about page is that I’m a lover of learning. I’ve probably ventured into more ideas and looked into more careers than 10 people put together!

I love exploring new things and I when I get bored (which I almost always do ;-) ) I move onto the next venture. I’ve come to terms with my need for constant mental stimulation and live am a happier person for it (although at times can be frustrating).

I’m actually currently investing my time in exactly what I want to do and hopefully it will be something I do for a LONG time. I think if I can continue to grow and inject some diversity into it, than all will work out great.

Very insightful post… thanks for sharing it!

    Martin,
Great and well thought out post AGAIN. I can see your analytical mind at work…..

You mentioned in your post that
what you love most is the thrill of experiencing the unknown.
I can certainly relate to that. Before i got married and had kids, i travelled regularly, lived in Japan for 3.5 years, with occasional jumps over to Bali, Philippines, france hong kong and more.
Then i got married and settled down. But that thrill for experiencing new things never left me. I graduated with a degree in economics and thought i was going to be a COrporate financial analyst. What happened was i changed careers over 8 times in 11 years. I loved learning a new skill set over staying in the same job like most people do. It payed off, i ended up making big bucks but then i looked back and thought i want more than just work challenges.

So now i am back on my one true love. Travelling. We moved across country to stay in Montreal (now going on 8 months) This summer we are on the road for 2 months to see cape code, north Carolina beaches and more. And then we are hoping to apply for a long term residence in France, Costa Rical or maybe my place of birth Thailand…

So Martin, i totally get what you mean about experiencing life. We have a family and i have 3 kids. so don’t ever lose that curiosity when you have your family. It’s a myth that you have to settle down and be a boring person…

I love travelling, I will love to visit other cultures and see how they go about daily mundane things and probably learn a thing or two.
Bali, seems to be the hot spot! Stacey from MylifestyleMax’s been there, Adam Stanecki from the business jolt’s been there, and now you! Is that were you all source your incredible blogging powers and inspiration from ?hmmmm I need to look into it ;)
I’m currently on the other side of Economics, which is Accounting and I can totally understand what you mean by “corporate”, its not as dynamic and challenging as you’ll love it to be, plus again the freedom! (okay, enough about the freedom! I’m starting to sound like a crusader lol)
Thanks for sharing your story with us Annie, you’ve just proven to me that the “family excuse” isnt enough to warrant an escape card from pursuing your dreams and passion.

You nailed it Martin. It seems that you have dialed in on one of the most ancient secrets. Seneca talks about this in his letters ‘On the Shortness of Life’ and it really hits me.

Martin, I love this! Particularly this (which does make sense to me) ” the future is so uncertain that the only certainty is the uncertainty of tomorrow” You love the unknown – wow – I’m impressed!

What am I currently investing in and what would I prefer to be investing in? I’m currently preparing a sales pitch for our business. It’s a challenge and a lot (read: a HUMONGOUS AMOUNT) rests on it, but it’s not where my heart is. It’s become the “day job” since I started working with my passion – my writing. One day the day job and the passion will have the same foundation, but until they do, I’m trading my hours today for a confidence to do a video presentation and do it well!

One day, though, and soon, I’ll trade my days for the thing I came here to do! And I’ll do that through my writing. You really got me thinking! Every day, I trade a day of my life for something. What will it be today?

    Martin,

I found your site through a link from Eugene’s site.

I do find this to be a fascinating topic you have brought up. I often think of my time as a valuable currency, so it isn’t much of a stretch to view it like that.

One phrase I heard years ago was “work hard; play hard”. I am not one to often sit around watching TV doing nothing.

I will often work online for 14-15 hours a day. Sometimes for a numerous days in a row. But then I also take time off and to have a great social life with friends, family and my girlfriend.

It is important to me to work hard at both. you cannot just live for enjoyment, but you cannot also just live for work.

I have a job I love, I make sure i take an exciting trip somewhere every few months, I try to learn new things but i still work to travel and enjoy life.

Knowing what you want to exchange your days for and realizing your TIME is important and not to be wasted is essential.

  9. Mitch Mitchell (May 17, 2011, 8:37 pm).

Interesting concept of how to look at one’s life. Truthfully, if someone put a number on how long I had to live I’d probably spend half that time being depressed because I tend to be a counter and I’d be counting down the days instead of enjoying them. Why does that become important? Because most people are like me, only in reverse. They think they have all the time in the world and suddenly stuff sneaks up on them. I feel I don’t have all the time I want and thus do things, which unfortunately involves things like cake and chocolate; I don’t drink so no drunken nights for me, though I did have a few of those 72+ hour marathons in college.

Nine hours on a train; ouch!

    Another great post!

Knowledge of our own mortality is a great motivator.

I discovered a couple of years ago that I was SPENDING my time away from my family so I could spend time with my family later. What flawed logic. I was working to provide but I wasn’t there.

Now I spend time with my family and I work around that. Eventually I will work less and earn more and be with my family almost all of the time.

Once you know what is truly important to you, you can choose the road that you must travel.

  12. Kathryn Aragon (May 17, 2011, 10:00 pm).

    Great post, Martin.

The Mulligan quote resonates with me as well. Life is way too short to let it slip by without a thought. Every moment we make a decision about what’s important, and all too often, we choose to waste our time instead of investing it in something valuable or important.

One of the things that helps me stay on track is to imagine what people will say about me after I’m gone. What is the legacy I’m leaving behind? Does it match my life goals?

I’ve wanted to be a (rich and famous) writer since I was a kid. Since then, I’ve added a few other priorities, like happy, well-adjusted kids and world travel. So far, so good. My kids are terrific. I’m a well-established writer, if not exactly rich or famous. And I’ve been to three other countries.

Time really is the currency that buys our dreams. I may not always invest perfectly, but I’m satisfied that my account is growing. Thanks for the reminder, Martin, and keep up the good work.

    • Martin (May 18, 2011, 6:21 am).

      Hey Kathryn!
Welcome to NJMART.IN the mobile blog! The mulligan quote embodies this in quite a nice way and with way less words than I used ;) It tends to be a conscious decisions whereby we each decide to make and do what we can to obtain something valuable with each day we exchange!
The fact that you obtain fulfillment from what you do (write) and you keep on adding to your list of goals (family, work, travelling) are just testament that you’ve invested your time wisely. May not have always been the case, but HEY! no ones perfect and its these imperfection that make it all fun!

Martinsays: Hope to see you more often Kathryn!

It looks like you are off to a great start here. I just read your About page & it looks like you have some great ideas. Putting content on this site only via iPhone is a great idea too. I have a feeling that will become more common in the near future. Actually, I currently write most of my posts on my Blackberry (though I add pictures on PC later).

Anyway, to your post. I think that pretty much everything we have is somehow traded for something or other. Certainly, time is one of the most important of them. You can always make more money, but your is limited and almost always unknown in quantity.

I have started forcing myself to leave work earlier and turn off the computer at home earlier too. Spending time with my family has become my priority, which is odd as when I was younger that was definitely not the case.

Really great thoughts Martin. I enjoyed reading it.

    Hi Martin,
I’m a spot older than you, so we, by generational gap think differently. It’s nice at your age to have goals, dreams and desires. Thinking positively helps.

Remember this. As you grow in years and wisdom, you’ll come to understand that you represent little in the grand design of things. Those who find themselves at fates doorstep are not the masters of their own destiny, rather victims of a universe that will never be understood or mastered.

  16. Adrienne (May 18, 2011, 4:27 am).

Well this is a subject I’m very familiar with. Now this comment could end up being a short story so I’ll try to sum up what I think.

I live each day to the fullest and have learned to stay in the present moment. Tomorrow is not guaranteed and my plans for the future have changed three times in my life all at the snap of someone elses fingers. So although your future is important and your planning for your business or career are also important, you just do what you can do at the time.

Because of that, I live with no regrets. I’m very happy and just love life. So my life is worth everything to me which is why I live it to the fullest each and every day.

Wow, I summed that one up pretty good. Am proud of myself actually Martin.

Thanks for sharing this with us, very insightful indeed.

Thanks for the support and stopping by! BTW I never worry if its long or short, the essence is the intention behind the story :)
Its a good thing to always live in the “now” and your story reminds me of this talk I attended. The presenter worked as an investment advisor for a corporate firm which had established itself in the UK. He worked his *** off climbing the ladder and eventually dragging the company along to higher heights. Then come the crisis, they had to fold up, by that time he had become regional manager and over saw more than what he had begun with. The directors called all of them in a room together with all other employees, and after a lengthy speech came the news, they were been laid off and had to pack off! This guys saw all what he had strived and achieved all blow up into thin air by the “snap of the fingers” , and it was then he made the conscious decision and never will he let someone walk through a door and determine his future and that of this family. Needless to say it hasnt been fun since then, but its more fulfilling.

It’s so, so important to realize that time is our most valuable asset. Without that, we fritter it away without a second thought.

    Martin,

As everyone has mentioned this post was very nicely done. Particularly considering that you do all your blogging MOBILE?!?! I couldn’t do it – I love having a keyboard.

I love the way you framed this question. It’s rare that we break up the way we view the time in our life into short intervals. Thinking in terms of daily intention really helps bring perspective to what your committing yourself to in that very moment. I believe that looking at life this way is an important practice (not to say that looking beyond that isn’t).

One thing this post brought to my mind is that it’s not just what we do with our time but HOW we do what we do with our time that matters just as much. As someone mentioned earlier, having a positive mindset, living from a place of gratitude, and striving to be a force for good in the world are a big part of things.

Something you wouldn’t find on my about page is that I’m an idea incubator. I spend a lot of time churning ideas and fostering curiosity. I think those are some of the best ways to grow personally and possible make an impact on those around you.

Thank you for the invitation to come read this article Martin. I enjoyed every minute. :)

Hey Martin, how are you? Wonderful and timely post for me.

I am 95% satisfied with my life and the way I spend my time, I just wish I had more of it in a day so I could get more of the work done that I like to do and have twice the time to play with my kids after school.

I am incredibly stingy with my time. I don’t hang out with friends during the week, I work my business… frankly I love it. with that said, I don’t like ‘the drop in” or having to step outside my own dotted line too much.

today, (and this is why this post is timely) is because I worked my proverbial A$$ off cleaning the house and getting ready for my significant others mom who came for dinner. she is from out of town.

Dinner was great… but using a day to prepare …was it worth it? … NOT!!

I’m not sure off the top of my head what you might not find in my about page….perhaps that I am a workaholic and love it? I can’t remember now whether I ever mentioned that.

Were you going to Skype me one of these days… you were going to bounce something off me… I’ve been wondering! :-)

    best

    Jayne

      Hey Jayne!
This been a really busy week! I’m sure its been same everywhere :) Really appreciate the time taken to join in with us all!
Sometimes I wish I had an extra hour or two per day to just go about doing things I love but alas its impossible! Glad you are 95% in satisfaction as thats pretty hard to accomplish till you know what you want out of life and hopefully plan how to get it. Talking about planning, Lori @ Lifeforinstance wrote an interesting post about fate or free will which I think if you get the chance to read it , you’ll love it! (http://lifeforinstance.com/2011/05/19/free-will-or-fate-what-rules-your-life/)
Haha! Not worth it you say? Glad you it was timely! But i’m sure it wasnt a complete waste of time :)
      Yep workaholic all the way!!!!

Martinsays: I’m getting to you on skype ASAP ! Thanks Jayne

Martin great post as it had me asking myself some tough questions. I actually work in the investing world so I can apply some of the same prinicples that many people apply to their money. In my life I do my best to try not to put all my eggs in one basket. In all honesty I am terrible at it. I am working to diversify my portfolio into three areas, serving, family, and work. Right now I am heavily invested in work. In the perfect world I would like to give my time creating outreach programs to help the people who need it the most. I would like to teach investing classes to the underprivlaged, developing the careers of the unemployed and encouraging the masses with my writing. Until then I will continue to annoy the blogging world with my random thoughts. :-) Great post.

@Frank-A Spark Starts Thanks for stopping by Frank! I never knew you had a Fin. background? Thats interesting. What do you invest in? It must be an interesting career I bet ;) Yep diversify, diversify! The true words of an investor :) Just the other day, I had my head wrapped around diversification of stock in order to reduce portfolio unique risk (argghh! accounting!!) The magic trio: Family,Work,Others (dont know whats the right order). Yeah, everyone will love to have an ideal situation, I guess thats the reason why we’re working ourselves off! And I love your goals, in trying to enlighten others as much as you can! Living with a purpose!Martinsays:Thanks

Sorry, but I will stand my ground on this one. Your life isn’t accounting, nor professional development. Being young and not going out and having fun, is missing out the best out of your life.

Sorry, but when will you have “THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE” if not NOW? I’ve been through it, had wicked nights, that I can write novels about, spent nights with gorgeous girls and each that moment counts, more than any money can buy!

Day has 24 hours. Be consistent, work, but all work and no fun…

Where will your inspiration come from? Common, you’re in your early 20ies, you got lifetime ahead of you. Don’t take the TIME OF YOUR LIFE doing boring stuff!

    Hey Martin,
You’ve got something going here, in a big way. In challenging yourself, you also challenge us. Thanks for that.
I really do believe that today has power. We can make it into anything we want. And our lives are determined by how we have spent these days. They add up. And, quick.

For of all sad words of tongue or pen; The saddest are these: “It might have been!

Cemeteries are loaded with best-selling books, inventions, brilliant ideas and world traveling. Unfulfilled.
What if we pushed aside our fears, blaming and excuse making? What of it?
I think Martin that you are on the road to discovering just that. Keep inspiring Brother. And…
    Live it LOUD!

Interesting quote! Sometimes I feel like I live my days like there is no tomorrow, lol. While this is not entirely true, what I really mean is that if I can get something done today, I would rather invest my time on productive things rather than anything else, with the exception of giving attention to my family and very close friends :)
