Simple trick that keeps me in 5th gear everyday

7th May 2011Musings,

Once in a while I get this feeling which I’m sure you’ve had a couple of times. You know those mornings or days were you feel only 60% you, that time were you don’t feel BIG any longer and everything and person surrounding you looks so massive.

(BTW: I thought I should mention that I’m writing this post while walking to a friends place to help him move! The joy of being a mobile preneur (does that word even exist?)

Now back to that smallish, tynish feeling of failure you get once in a while. Guess what? I’ve got a trick that not only gets me out of that state but super charges me to go full throttle throughout my day.
This is something I learned from the book “The Magic of thinking big” those of you who have read it will agree that it’s one hell of a book. ( if you haven’t, pick it up and read it. You can thank me later)

The technique : Simple pep talk

You know how good you feel after working your ass off a project and you get the “I’m proud of you” or “congratulations you did a great job”. Apparently some scientists discovered that this encouragement increases your performance by millions of percentage (duh?I didn’t need a scientist to tell me that)
Anyways the technique is simple, all you have to do is write down your pep talk and every single hour of the day say it out loud in your mind or vocally, it all depends on you.
Below you’ll see what mine looks like and I implore you to please do the same, you can even copy the structure :

Martin junior meet Martin Junior! One of the brightest minds in accounting you will ever come across. Martin you’re a big thinker, so think big. Think big about everything, thing big about your career, thing big about your relationship, think big about what you deserve. Think big about everything!
You’ve got plenty of ability to do a first class job so don’t settle for second. For you, second doesn’t exist, it’s first you want and it’s first your going to get.
Martin you believe in happiness, progress and prosperity.
So: talk only happiness
Talk only progress
Talk only prosperity
Martin, you’ve got lots of drive, lots of drive. So put that drive to work, nothing can stop you!
Martin you’re enthusiastic. Let your passion and enthusiasm show through. Let no one tell you otherwise!
You look good Martin and you feel good today. Stay that way!
Martin you were a great fellow yesterday and guess what ? You’ll be an even GREATER fellow today. Now go for it, Martin. Go crush it!

Long right? Sounds like crazy talk? Trust me, if you haven’t tried it you’ll think it is crazy talk. I thought so once, too before I tried it. Below you’ll find a similar one but with blank spaces. Replace your name with the blank spaces and read it out loud or in your mind and REALLY MEAN IT. some of the blank spaces have to be filled with things you want or desire. Do it Then tell me how you feel after.

_______ meet _______ an important _______ a really important person. _______ you’re a big thinker, so think big. Think big about everything. You’ve got plenty of potential and ability to be an outstanding _______

_______ you believe in _______, _______, and_______
So talk only _______
Talk only _______
Talk only _______

You’ve got lots of energy ,_______, lots of energy. So put that to work because nothing can stop you on your way to progress. Nothing!
_______ you’re enthusiastic. Let your enthusiasm show through.
You look good, _______ , and you feel good. Stay that way!
_______ you were great yesterday, today be greatEST! Now GO FORWARD !

My advice to you, if you found this really useful, print it out fill the blank spaces and give it a place next to your work station were you can see and read it every morning before setting out. I’ve got mine on my phone and the good thing is I can give myself this pep talk every time, anytime!
Another thing you could do is to share this article with a special friend you know who could do with some positive thinking and words of encouragement!

And if you’ve read this far, I will appreciate it if you could COPY the pep talk and fill the blanks spaces with your own answers and PASTE it in the comment section!

(Ps: by the way, am no longer walking, it actually took me more than I had expected to get done with this post, so enjoy! And I’ll love to hear the different ways you get yourself going each morning)

    Hey Martin,
I LOVE this! I had to stop mid-way through to fill in the blanks. I’m going to read them daily along with my daily goals. Thank you for this – it makes a lot of sense and comes at a good time for me, a time when I’m trying to pause before entering my work day to think about my goals (and now – run my pep talk ) and what I want to do before I rush to work! Brilliant!
I Wish Listed the book. I’ll thank you after I get and read it.

Lori, it means a lot that you’ve taken the time out of your busy schedule to get the ball rolling and share with us your experience and what your pep talk looks like. Love this because it helps me to get to know you as well as others better! Really love the words you used and and the way it sounded! Really sounded personal and with lots of intent!

      Martinsays: Thank you!

  2. Bojan (May 7, 2011, 10:24 am).

I like the idea, but would improve on the template.

    • Martin (May 7, 2011, 10:43 am).

Thanks for stopping by Bojan, will love to see what your personal pep talk will look like. In terms of template, it’s open to revision as it’s more of a personal think than a generic one. The goals and what you want to achieve will definitely differ from person to person hence you’ll have a different pep talk! Bu I’ll definitely be interested in seeing your revised version.

Martinsays: Jump in and pos your pep talk!

  4. Jk Allen (May 7, 2011, 12:38 pm).

    Hey Martin,

I love it – positive self talk. Personally, I fiend for it, more than I do from hearing it from others. I hold my self to standards far above anyone else’s expectations, so often time when I get it from others – it might not be the same as getting a “good job” from myself because the standards are different.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m human so I like to get positive feedback, and some days I just don’t feel up to reaching my ONE-TEN performance that I expect out of myself.

When I say ONE-TEN, I mean going beyond the minimal 100% expectations. This is how I position myself to be the new standard in my professional life…distinguishing me from my peers.

Great write-up Martin! What were you using when you were walking and writing…your phone or a pad?

Have a good one – PEACE.

      Hey JK,
thanks for having you around! I was using my phone. It’s kind of like texting!
Like you say there something in it when you say it yourself. It’s like giving yourself a commitment, a personal commitment to which you are likely to hold yourself accountable!
It’s a good confidence boost too!

    Hi Martin,

    Luv it!

Self-talk determines where we’re headed. We choose words, which create feelings, which move us into action which attract results.

Self-talk is critical. It’s a plan, really. You repeat ideas to yourself and eventually live out the ideas. Pretty cool personal development tool, and your idea is embraced by many leaders and successful people.

I stop each hour to perform affirmations, visualize or meditate. Mental science is THE science, because how you choose to think and feel is how you choose to live. You can’t possibly get a result without first thinking your result into existence.

Spot on tips and powerful affirmation Martin. I stated it and felt an energy surge.

Thanks for sharing with me on Twitter. Have a powerful weekend!

Love the fact that you stop each hour or once every time to recharge and get your goals straight. These affirmations are what helps to keep us in the game!

I like quotes from wise people, so I write them down and cover my desk with them. It’s a good way for me to pick myself up, but this “pep talk” looks like it would work great, too. I’m definitely going to give it a try. Thanks for the awesome post Martin. Catch ya later.

Damn… Not the first one here… Oh well… SICK POST DUDE… For sure man positive self talk all the way…

You have to be your biggest coach, and FAN at the same time!!!

I mean, if you aren’t proud of what you do, who will?

I think the most important takeaway though, is how important it is to get over NEGATIVE self talk… You have provided the best way. Do not think about NOT doing something, instead replace it with something positive. So instead of trying to NOT Negative talk to yourself, try EMPHASIZING positive self remarks.

    Surfs up,

I really liked it martin, only question I have: what do you do if you actually peptalk yourself every day, and suddenly you get to hear your project wasn’t good enough? Doesn’t all the peptalk give you an extra portion of stress? You’re telling yourself your the greatest, best, … and suddenly all of that seems to be untrue?

    • Martin (May 8, 2011, 9:33 am).

      Hey Dries,
First of Thanks for stopping by! True what you day and I get your angle! But there’s one thing you shouldn’t forget, “you are only a failure when YOU say or concede your a failure”. Good or bad are very subjective terms and you shouldn’t let someone else’s OWN definition of failure or success over shadow yours.

      Martinsays: Thanks

Hey Martin, this is really a good way to pep talk (and ‘flog’) our minds to get off its a$##. Ok now, let me take a show:

Stella meet Stella, an important business consultant, a kick-ass project manager and blogger; a really important person. Stella, common, you’re a big thinker, so think big NOW. Think big about everything. You’ve got plenty of potential and ability to be an outstanding YOU…

Nice. Martin. Sometimes we really need to remind ourselves of what we could do and what we could accomplish. That Pep talk could really help. I also remembered about an experiment about one class being praised while the other was… I forgot lol.. But yeah, the class being encouraged performed better than the other.

I also give this learning back to my everyday life. Teach not scold. Guide not belittle. etc…

    Have a good day ahead!

Hey Martin, this was simple inspired genius. There are many people who wake up feeling less that 60% everyday, sometimes for chemical reasons outside of their control. This is a beautiful message of self affirmation, confirmation and encouragement, that we could all apply to our day. Even it it took you from 60% to 80%, that would be one hell of an improvement. I loved this Martin, it was really timely

Good stuff Martin! I don’t have one in particular pep talk, but I do have a # of different sayings, reminders, and even cartoons (Gaping Void illustrations) surrounding my workplace. Like you, whenever I’m in a rut, I re-visit these and remind myself to push through and grind it out.

I also try to emphasize being totally present. What can I do in this moment to complete this task at the best of my ability? It’s a daily challenge to not worry about everything on our plate and just focus on the task at hand.

Thanks for sharing this and sorry it took me so long to respond!

This is awesome Martin. It’s a great little technique, never thought of doing it before.

Usually if I’m not in the mood to do work I try to get myself in the right frame of mind by listening to some good music and getting pumped up to be productive.

But this is something new. Might work even better if you record it, and play it back to yourself first thing in the morning. Start the day off right.
