Dont take candy from strangers, I swear

28th Nov 2011Case Study: Unconventional Ways

Last week i set my self the absurd goal of creating an income within one week and so far its being quite stressful but overall i am kind of happy with the way thing are going except for one thing.

In trying to market what I had to offer, I forgot one basic rule in online etiquettes

“You need to give before you receive”

Thats plainly said as possible. Before I went on holidays I had built myself a good audience but that all changed as i was in the limbo for quite a while hence i lost most of that readership

so here i was offering my product/service to people i barely new, introducing myself all over again and encouraging them to test out my product.

Honestly I dont want to brag or what but i am quite happy with the product i churned out, but the people i pitched to werent interested in giving this a second thought, even though i was offering them a product which retails normally at $37 for free just for them to give it a test drive, but alas NO, they didnt want to .

WHY?

I hadnt built a rapport with them!

But its FREE I said

But money isnt the problem here or the issue. The issue is that you wouldnt take candy from a complete stranger, would you?

And thats exactly what i was trying to do, offer candy to complete strangers, people i never knew and people who never knew me in return.

So basically that was a hard sell.

So what?

People buy from people they know and trust, they no longer buy the features even the BENEFITS it brings to them

But rather they buy because they know that person, they know who he is, they know what he looks like , they know what he talks about plus all this helps them easily trust him.

What if the product is crap?

It doesn’t even matter if the product is crap, so long as they know him they will be willing to support him, provide valuable feedback and help him provide an excellent product through their valuable feedback

so in essence it pays to build that trust before anything else. This is a lesson i had to learn the had way and thats why i am hoping you take this lesson away.

Might not be something great like knowing were everyone in the blogosphere ives or their phone number or skyping regularly , just a simple tweet saying hi or regularly commenting and sharing their posts can go a long way in building that rapport with them.

So learning from this, go out there, look for one blog, comment, share their post and say hi to them via twitter. Repeat this process on and on and you will reap the benefit when you are about to launch a product in the future as these very people will be there to help you promote this product of yours genuinely.

So to all those out there reading this, let me know if your blog needs new RSS subscribers or new comments or shares, let me know in the comments.

I will like to meet you all and maybe build some rapport with you, and sneakily in the future push some products through you :)

Indeed, as a new blogger I am realising the amount of time and effort takes to connect with people and earn their trust and respect, as someone who doesn’t have a whole lot of time and energy to space it can be tempting to just promote my own interests without living on the two way street, though I know, if I want someone to invest in me and promote my ideas then I need to take the time to listen to their ideas too and that’s really what it is all about. Some good advice here that hit home, thanks :)

Very interesting post, and I like how you put those two things together. I think that’s why people need to remember to write posts ahead of time so that people always think you’re around when you’re going on vacation or might get ill. Even if you don’t respond to comments immediately if you’ve established the pattern people will know you’ll get there eventually.

    Good lesson taught!
